Visit San Diego Musical Theatre for tickets.

Maury Yeston’s riveting and haunting musical based on the worst nautical disaster in history (and not the movie), depicts the final hours of the real-life people who set sail on the “unsinkable” Titanic. Winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Titanic celebrates the human spirit of the rich and the poor, the lovers, the heroes and cowards for a theatrical experience that will stay with you long after the curtain comes down. San Diego Regional Premiere.
Bradley J. Behrmann plays second class passenger Charles Clark, seen above bidding farewell to his fiancee, Caroline.
Titanic runs August 17-September 3 at Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista, CA. See the full cast and creative team here. For tickets and more information, click here.

After revisions from the June 2015 World Premiere of Just Pretend: A New Musical, co-creators Orin Johnson and Bradley J. Behrmann are pleased to announce that the show is now available for general licensing.
The story follows a troupe of actors on the eve of their seemingly doomed production of the Purim spiel as they grapple with the story of Esther and with their own insecurities. This show-within-a-show lends itself perfectly to schools, churches, synagogues, and youth theatre. Just Pretend features a contemporary musical theatre score and a large cast with several strong female leads. With a witty book and a crafted score, this show will be a journey of faith and humor for both audiences and performers.
See the official Just Pretend website for more information on licensing.

Sister Act is the feel-amazing musical comedy smash that has audiences rejoicing! Sister Act tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look — a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. Based on the hit Whoopi Goldberg film, this musical would raise the roof, if we had one! San Diego Regional Premiere.
Sister Act runs June 15-July 2 at Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista, CA. See the full cast and creative team here. For tickets and more information, click here.

One facet of the Ben Vereen Awards that deals with the holistic health of high school students is the Wellness Through the Arts (WTA) program. In conjunction with the esteemed musical theatre competition, the WTA (a pet project of Mr. Vereen himself) solicits essays from area high school students who have faced issues with bullying and obesity. Five winning essays became the raw material for a new piece of musical theatre, composed by Bradley J. Behrmann with lyrics adapted by Jamie Gilchrist and Behrmann.
Members of the J*Company Youth Theatre rehearsed the piece (entitled “I Am”), received coaching from Mr. Vereen, and performed the piece at the Ben Vereen Awards on May 29, 2016 at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego.
“Each of the five essay winners showed great resilience in the face of adversity, and so the piece attempts to capture that spirit,” said Behrmann. “The words of the essays read like a manifesto, and so the lyrics, especially in the main themes, reflect that strength. And the piano is violently joyful during those sections. We crafted five vignettes to feature each of the five winners. Melodically, this is where we expressed the tone of each of the essayists, from tender to humorous to downright heartbreaking.”
James Herbert of the San Diego Union-Tribune called the piece “stirring.” Read more about the 2016 Ben Vereen Awards here.

The Ben Vereen Awards San Diego Competition recognizes the very best of high school musical theatre talent in San Diego County in collaboration with the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA). In 2015, the Ben Vereen Awards inaugurated the Wellness Through the Arts Essay/Video Contest, using the performing arts as a foundation for a healthier lifestyle to focus on key topics of obesity, diabetes, low self-esteem, and bullying. Winning entries became the raw material for a musical theatre collaboration performed at the annual awards ceremony.
This year, the Ben Vereen Awards has commissioned Bradley J. Behrmann as composer for the 2016 Wellness Through the Arts. In collaboration with Jamie Gilchrist and Kikau Alvaro, Behrmann will be creating a new piece of musical theatre called “My Best Day.”
The Ben Vereen Awards will be held May 29, 2016 at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego, CA.
